18TH ANNUAL SADAKO PEACE DAY CEREMONY
18th Annual Sadako Peace Day Ceremony On this 67th anniversary of Hiroshima/Nagasaki bombings, join us in the beautiful Sadako Peace Garden, an International Garden for Peace. Together we will share reflections on peace, music and poetry, as we witness to and work for peace on our world.
The Peace Garden at La Casa is dedicated to the memory of Sadako Sasaki, the brave and athletic Japanese girl who inspired the world. She was only 12 years old when she was diagnosed with leukemia. She had been exposed to radiation from the Hiroshima atomic bomb at the age of two.
She started folding origami paper cranes after a friend reminded her of a legend: if a person folds a thousand cranes, he or she will live to be very old. As Sadako folded the cranes, she would say the words written above. "I will write peace on your wings and you will fly all over the world."
Sadako set out to fold 1,000 cranes and inspired by here children around the world have continued to fold the paper cranes as a symbol of peace.
The Sadako Peace Garden at La Casa de Maria was installed in 1995, on the 50th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. It is also one of the International Gardens for Peace.
Co-sponsored with Nuclear Age Peace Foundation.
